Mental Health in Cyber Security


Mental health in the cybersecurity industry is becoming more and more relevant, especially with the rising prevalence of burnout. Cybersecurity practitioners and professionals carry an incredible burden as they strive to keep our data safe from malicious threats.


I've talked about this a few times on my YouTube channel, trying to outline some potential avenues to avoid burnout in the workplace, but have often come back to my own advice as things get a bit gristly, because the truth is, everyone has a moment here and there where things just get a bit hard.

On top of this, cyber security workers must work consistent hours for extended periods without breaks, as malicious threats can cause serious damage to a company’s assets.

In fact, a UK security news outlet found that burnout is the leading cause of mental health issues in the industry. People working in cyber security often feel isolated, undervalued, and overwhelmed. These emotions can lead to depression and anxiety, as well as a host of other mental health issues.Organizations need to be more proactive when it comes to addressing mental health issues in the cybersecurity industry. It is important to create an atmosphere that is understanding and supportive of employees struggling with mental health issues.


Companies should increase resources for mental health support, such as providing access to therapists and mental health professionals. Additionally, institutions must take a proactive stance when it comes to reducing burnout and promoting work-life balance.
